Brother Printer Not Printing After Replacing Toner: Complete Fix Guide
Replaced your Brother printer toner but it still won't print or says 'toner low'? Learn how to reset the toner counter, fix gear issues, and get printing again.
By Solve Tech Problems Online Team
One of the most frustrating experiences with a Brother laser printer is replacing the toner cartridge only to find the printer still won’t print — or still shows a “Toner Low” or “Replace Toner” message. This is a common issue, and the fix is usually straightforward once you understand what’s happening.
Why Your Brother Printer Won’t Recognize the New Toner
There are several reasons your Brother printer might not recognize a newly installed toner:
- The toner counter hasn’t been reset — Brother printers track toner usage with an internal counter, and it doesn’t always reset automatically
- The toner cartridge gear isn’t engaging properly with the printer
- The corona wire tab wasn’t slid properly after installation
- A third-party or refilled toner isn’t communicating correctly
- The drum unit needs replacement — sometimes the issue is the drum, not the toner
Fix 1: Reset the Toner Counter (Most Common Fix)
Brother printers use an internal page counter to estimate toner levels. When you replace the toner, this counter doesn’t always reset automatically — especially with non-OEM cartridges. Here’s how to reset it manually.
For Brother HL Series (No Display Screen):
- Open the front cover of the printer (where you access the toner)
- Press and hold the Go button for about 4 seconds
- When all the LEDs light up, release the Go button
- Close the front cover
- The toner counter should now be reset
For Brother MFC/DCP Series (With Display Screen):
Standard Reset:
- Open the front cover
- Press Clear or Clear/Back on the control panel
- The display should show a menu — select Toner Reset or the specific toner option
- Press OK to confirm
- Close the front cover
Alternative Method (for newer models):
- Open the front cover
- Press * (Star/Asterisk) on the keypad
- The display will show the reset menu
- Select the toner you want to reset (e.g., “K” for black, or “ALL”)
- Press OK to confirm
- Close the front cover
For Brother HL-L Series (Newer Models with Screen):
- Open the front cover
- Press and hold the Go button until the display shows “Reset Menu”
- Use the arrow keys to select TN Reset (toner reset)
- Press OK
- Close the front cover
:::info[Tip] The exact button sequence varies slightly between Brother models. If the above methods don’t work, check your printer’s manual or try the alternative method below. :::
Fix 2: Clean the Corona Wire
After replacing toner, the corona wire inside the drum unit needs to be cleaned. If you skipped this step, it can cause print issues.
- Open the front cover and remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly
- Look for the corona wire tab — it’s a small green or blue tab on the drum unit
- Slide the tab gently from left to right and right to left 5-6 times
- Return the tab to the home position (usually marked with an arrow or “Home” label) — if you don’t return it to the home position, you’ll get a dark stripe on your prints
- Reinstall the toner and drum assembly
- Close the front cover
:::warning[Important] Always return the corona wire tab to its home position after cleaning. Leaving it in the middle will cause a vertical dark line on all printed pages. :::
Fix 3: Check the Toner Gear and Installation
Sometimes the toner cartridge isn’t seated properly, or the gear mechanism isn’t engaging.
- Open the front cover and remove the toner cartridge
- Inspect the gear on the side of the toner cartridge — make sure it’s not damaged or missing
- Look inside the printer for any broken gear pieces or obstructions
- Reinstall the toner cartridge — push firmly until you feel it click into place
- Make sure the toner is fully seated against the drum unit
- Close the front cover and try printing
Fix 4: Clean the Toner Sensor
Brother printers use a sensor to detect the toner level. If the sensor is dirty, it may not recognize the new cartridge.
- Remove the toner cartridge from the printer
- Look for the sensor window — a small clear plastic window on the side of the toner cartridge
- Wipe it gently with a dry, lint-free cloth
- Look inside the printer for the corresponding sensor and gently wipe it as well
- Reinstall the toner and try printing
Fix 5: Check If It’s Actually a Drum Issue
If you’ve replaced the toner but print quality is still poor (streaks, spots, faded areas), the issue might be the drum unit, not the toner.
Signs It’s the Drum, Not the Toner:
- Repetitive marks on printed pages at regular intervals
- A “Replace Drum” message on the printer display
- Print quality issues persist even after replacing toner
- The drum unit has been in use for more than 10,000-15,000 pages (drums last much longer than toner but do wear out)
How to Replace the Drum:
- Purchase a compatible drum unit for your Brother model (check the model number on the side of your printer)
- Open the front cover and remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit
- Remove the old drum unit
- Install the new drum unit
- Insert the toner cartridge into the new drum unit
- Reinstall the assembly and close the front cover
- Reset the drum counter (similar process to toner reset — open front cover, press Clear, select Drum Reset, press OK)
Fix 6: Use Genuine Brother Toner
If you’re using third-party or refilled toner cartridges, the printer’s counter system may not recognize them properly. Brother printers are particularly sensitive to non-OEM toner.
- Install a genuine Brother toner cartridge
- Reset the toner counter (see Fix 1)
- Test print
If the printer works with genuine toner but not third-party toner, the issue is compatibility — not a printer malfunction.
Fix 7: Power Cycle the Printer
Sometimes a simple power cycle clears the error:
- Turn off the printer
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer
- Wait 60 seconds
- Reconnect the power cord
- Turn on the printer
- Wait for it to fully initialize
- Try printing
Fix 8: Check for Error Codes
If your Brother printer has a display screen, check for specific error codes:
| Error Code | Meaning | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| TN | Toner not installed | Reseat the toner cartridge |
| DR | Drum needs replacement | Replace the drum unit |
| F2 | Internal error | Contact Brother support |
| E50 | Fuser unit error | Professional repair needed |
| Cover Open | Front cover not fully closed | Close the front cover firmly |
Preventing Future Toner Issues
- Always reset the toner counter when replacing toner, even if using OEM cartridges
- Clean the corona wire every time you replace toner
- Use genuine Brother toner for best compatibility
- Keep the printer clean — dust and toner powder inside the printer can cause sensor issues
- Store spare toner in its original packaging, flat (not standing on end), in a cool dry place
