HP Printer Not Printing Black Ink: 7 Solutions That Work

If your HP printer is printing blank pages or missing black ink, these 7 proven solutions will get it working again — from cleaning printheads to replacing cartridges.

By Solve Tech Problems Online Team

Few things are as frustrating as pressing print and getting a blank page — or a page where everything except the black text comes through. This is a well-known issue with HP printers, particularly the DeskJet, Envy, and OfficeJet series. The good news is that most of the time, the fix is simple.

Common Causes of Missing Black Ink

Before trying solutions, it helps to know what might be causing the problem:

  • Clogged or dried-out printhead nozzles (most common)
  • Empty or low black ink cartridge that the printer hasn’t detected
  • Air bubbles in the ink delivery system
  • Third-party or refilled cartridges that aren’t communicating properly
  • Outdated printer firmware causing incorrect ink level readings
  • Protective tape left on a new cartridge

Solution 1: Check the Ink Levels

Start with the obvious — make sure the black cartridge actually has ink.

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your computer or phone
  2. Select your printer
  3. Check the ink level display — if black is empty or critically low, replace the cartridge

If you don’t have the HP Smart app, you can also check ink levels via:

  • Windows: Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your HP printer > Open print queue > HP Printer Preferences > Services tab > Estimated Ink Levels

Solution 2: Remove and Reseat the Cartridge

Sometimes the cartridge isn’t making proper electrical contact with the printer.

  1. Turn on your HP printer
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door
  3. Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop
  4. Remove the black ink cartridge
  5. Check for any protective tape on the contacts or nozzles — if present, remove it
  6. Clean the copper-colored contacts gently with a lint-free cloth
  7. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place
  8. Close the access door and try printing

Solution 3: Run the Automated Printhead Cleaning

HP printers have a built-in cleaning utility that forces ink through the nozzles to clear clogs. This is the single most effective fix for missing black ink.

Using the HP Smart App:

  1. Open HP Smart and select your printer
  2. Go to Advanced Settings or Printer Settings
  3. Look for Tools or Maintenance
  4. Select Clean Printhead (or “Clean Cartridges”)
  5. The printer will make noise and print a test page when done
  6. Check the test page — if black is still missing, run the cleaning 2-3 more times

Using the Printer’s Control Panel:

The exact steps vary by model, but generally:

  1. Press the Setup (gear) icon on the printer’s control panel
  2. Navigate to Tools or Maintenance
  3. Select Clean Printhead
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts

:::info[Tip] Running the printhead cleaning utility uses a small amount of ink each time. Don’t run it more than 3-4 times in a row — if it hasn’t worked by then, move on to the next solution. :::

Solution 4: Manually Clean the Printhead

If the automated cleaning doesn’t work, you can clean the printhead manually. This works best on HP printers with removable printheads (OfficeJet Pro series, for example).

For Printers with Removable Printheads:

  1. Turn on the printer and open the cartridge access door
  2. Remove all ink cartridges
  3. Lift the printhead latch and carefully remove the printhead
  4. Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water (never tap water — minerals can clog nozzles)
  5. Gently wipe the bottom and back of the printhead — remove any dried ink
  6. Wipe the contacts inside the printer carriage
  7. Let the printhead dry for 10 minutes
  8. Reinstall the printhead and cartridges
  9. Run a test print

For Printers with Non-Removable Printheads (DeskJet, Envy):

  1. Remove the ink cartridges
  2. Dip a cotton swab in distilled water and squeeze out excess
  3. Gently wipe the ink nozzle area inside the printer where the cartridge sits
  4. Let it dry for 5 minutes
  5. Reinstall the cartridges and print a test page

Solution 5: Check for Firmware Updates

HP occasionally releases firmware updates that fix ink-related bugs.

  1. Open HP Smart and select your printer
  2. Go to Advanced Settings > Printer Update or Firmware Update
  3. Check for updates and install if available
  4. Alternatively, visit the official HP support website, search for your model, and download firmware updates manually

Solution 6: Try a Genuine HP Cartridge

If you’re using third-party, refilled, or remanufactured cartridges, the printer may not recognize them properly or they may have quality issues.

  1. Install a genuine, brand-new HP cartridge (not a refill)
  2. Print a test page
  3. If the problem is resolved, the issue was with the cartridge — not the printer

:::info[Did You Know?] HP printers are designed to work best with genuine HP ink. While third-party cartridges can work, they’re a frequent cause of print quality issues and “ink not printing” errors. :::

Solution 7: Reset the Printer

A full reset can clear internal errors that prevent black ink from flowing.

  1. Turn on the printer
  2. While the printer is on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the wall, then to the printer
  6. The printer should turn on automatically — if not, press the power button
  7. Wait for the printer to initialize, then try printing

When to Replace the Printhead

If you’ve tried all the solutions above and your HP printer is not printing black ink still, the printhead may be permanently damaged. This is more common on older printers or those that have been unused for long periods.

  • If your printer is under warranty: Contact HP support for a replacement printhead
  • If out of warranty: Compare the cost of a new printhead against the cost of a new printer — on some models, the printhead costs nearly as much as replacing the printer
